Signs
How you know
- Dense webbing in eaves, window frames, garage corners and under the deck
- Egg sacs tucked into siding laps and under handrails
- Big males crossing the hallway in September
- Funnel webs through the lawn after August rain
Species
What lives here
- Giant house spider
- Large, fast, harmless, and the one that startles people in a September hallway. Builds sheet webs in garages and crawlspaces.
- Cross orbweaver
- The big autumn web across your walkway. Useful, and rarely worth treating.
- Cellar spider
- Thin legs and untidy webbing in basements. A humidity signal.
- Black widow
- Uncommon here and stuck to hot dry sites. Identified before anyone does anything.
Treatment
How we deal with spiders
Physically de-web the eaves, frames and corners. This alone makes the biggest visible difference.
Residual product on the surfaces they cross.
Deal with the insects drawing them in, which usually comes down to lighting and moisture.
Take the egg sacs off, so the next generation does not hatch in place.
Prevention
Keeping them out
- Switch outside fixtures to warm or amber LED and stop feeding the food chain
- Sweep eaves, frames and deck undersides a few times across late summer
- Screen crawlspace and attic vents, keep the crawlspace dry
- Move woodpiles and stored bins away from the doors
Questions
Spiders, asked and answered
Are the big ones in my garage dangerous?
Giant house spiders are harmless. They are startling because they are large and quick, and that is all.
Will one spray keep them away all year?
No. Webbing rebuilds, and residuals wash off in our rain. Houses that want spiders held down go on a spring and late-summer schedule.
