Signs
How you know
- Small flies hovering over a drain, the recycling or the fruit bowl
- Sluggish flies collecting at upstairs windows on the first warm day of spring
- Dark speckling on light fixtures, ceilings and window frames
- A sudden crowd of big flies with a smell, which means a dead rodent or bird inside
Species
What lives here
- Fruit and vinegar flies
- Breeding in anything fermenting. Drain film, bin bottoms, recycling, overripe produce, beer taps.
- Drain and phorid flies
- Breeding in the film inside drain lines and under cracked tile. A stubborn phorid population can mean a broken drain.
- Cluster flies
- Overwinter in attics and wall voids in large numbers, then show up at interior windows on the first warm days.
- House and blow flies
- Filth breeders. Blow flies indoors in quantity point at a carcass.
Treatment
How we deal with flies
Identify the species, then find and remove the breeding material. That is the fix.
Biological drain treatment to strip the film that fruit and drain flies live in.
Void and attic treatment for cluster flies, plus sealing the way they get in.
Find and remove the carcass where blow flies point at one, then treat the site.
Prevention
Keeping them out
- Rinse recycling and wash the bins out
- Refrigerate fruit through late summer
- Flush and brush floor and mop-sink drains weekly
- Deal with rodents early, before one dies somewhere you cannot reach
Questions
Flies, asked and answered
Why do fruit flies come back after I clean?
The breeding site is almost never on the counter. It is the film inside a drain line, the bottom of the recycling bin, or a forgotten potato. A few grams of fermenting material supports the whole population.
Where are the flies at my upstairs windows in March coming from?
Your attic or wall voids. Cluster flies spent the winter there and they are heading for light to get out, which is why they appear indoors on the first warm day.
