How we deal with cockroaches
Monitor before treating. Sticky strips in the harbourage points size the problem honestly.
Gel bait and a growth regulator. Never broadcast spray, which drives them into voids and next door.
Treatment inside voids, hinges and appliance cavities, where they shelter.
In an apartment, we book the neighbouring and stacked suites as one job. Treat one unit alone and the population just moves and comes back.

Does one cockroach mean an infestation?
One big Oriental or American cockroach out of a drain can be a lone wanderer. One small striped German cockroach in a kitchen never is. That species lives in groups, so what you saw is the edge of it.
Why did the spray from the drugstore make it worse?
German cockroach scatters away from repellent aerosol. Deeper into voids, and in an apartment, into your neighbour's suite. Bait works with that behaviour instead of against it.
