Signs

How you know

  • A pet scratching, with dark specks in the coat that smear red on a damp tissue
  • Itchy bites around your ankles and lower legs
  • Fleas appearing days after an empty suite gets moved into
  • Live fleas on a white sock dragged across the carpet

Species

What lives here

Cat flea
Behind nearly every case we see, on cats and dogs alike.
Dog flea and rodent fleas
Less common. Rodent fleas show up after the rodents in a void are gone and the fleas need a new host.

Treatment

How we deal with fleas

  1. Line up with your vet first. Treat the room and not the animal and the cycle restarts.

  2. A written prep sheet. Vacuum thoroughly, then launder and hot-tumble all the pet bedding.

  3. Treat carpet, upholstery, cracks and the resting spots, with a growth regulator for the eggs and larvae.

  4. One follow-up for the pupae, which sit protected in their cocoons and hatch after the first visit.

Prevention

Keeping them out

  • Keep pets on year-round vet flea prevention
  • Vacuum traffic areas and pet spots weekly, and empty the canister outside
  • Wash pet bedding hot every week or two
  • Keep rodents and wildlife out of crawlspaces, decks and attics

Questions

Fleas, asked and answered

Why are there more fleas after treatment?

Pupae sit shielded inside cocoons and hatch on vibration and warmth. New adults a few days later is expected, and it is exactly what the follow-up visit is for.

We have no pets. Where did fleas come from?

Usually a rodent or raccoon that was living in a crawlspace, a void or under the deck. Once that host leaves or gets removed, its fleas go looking for another one.
